Within this film there are a number of protagonists and antagonists at any given time. For the most part I would say that Jim McAllister plays the part of the main protagonist. Like the discussion topic states, he is very flawed in character; however, I believe that he is the one who the audience relates to and pulls for. As most people would say, I also believe Tracy Flick is the main antagonist. For me she created a sense discust through her over achieving and snobish attitude. Jim McAllister and Tracy Flick also have their clashes, as the protagonist and antagonist classically do.
I believe that both Tracy Flick and Jim McAllister are protagonists. Although they are both protagonists, Jim is the character who the audience connects with most, making him the main protagonist. This is probably because Jim does the majority of the narration and the movie is from his point of view a good portion of the time. Jim and Tracy are also antagonists to each other; Jim obstructing Tacy's goal of being class president.
It is impossible to determine a single character as the central character in this movie. The fact is this film contains multi-protagonist and antagonist and I strongly believe this is caused by combining different series of plots where each storyline has its own lead character and its own antagonist. However, I think the roles play by Matthew Broderick (Jim McAllister) and Reese Witherspoon (Tracy Flick) appeals more to the audience due to the intense conflict between them and the fact their stories introduce and conclude the movie.
