Discussion Topic:
In class we discussed how color, wardrobe, and other elements of production design can be used to give information about a character or a scene to the audience.
In the above pictures (Keeping in mind that the first picture is the opening shot of the film where we are introduced to Barry for the first time.) what do the colors of their wardrobe say about the characters in relation to (in the first picture) their character traits, and (in the second 2 pictures) each other?

Barry Egan, played by Adam Sandler, is a very introverted character. Indicated by the opening scene of the movie, Egan secludes himself from society. He wears the same suit throughout the entire movie, illustrating that he prides himself in regularity and a consistent routine. The first picture and opening shot portrays Egan’s withdrawn and reclusive personality. The second picture shows that Barry Egan comes out of his shell with girlfriend, Lena Leonard. These two ‘couple’ pictures are well lit and colorful, which again illustrates the emotion between the two characters. Egan’s character clearly exudes passion and liveliness when he is around the love of his life. Throughout the movie, only Lena can trigger this type of extroverted behavior from Egan.
The opening shot of Punch, Drunk Love, shows Barry secluded in a dark corner. His clothes are dark revealing that he's a more muted man. In the scene where the couple are having dinner, again he is in the same dark suit and his side of the screen isn't well lit. Lena on the other hand is in a red dress meaning she's full of life and passion. Her job could be an example of that as she travels so much. At the table, she is leaning into Barry showing how interested she is in him. Light from above cascades upon her like an angel on the contrary to Barry.
In the last picture, yet again the same clothes. However, this time, the navy blue suit that Barry is wearing seems to be lighter in color than before. He's falling in love. Also, instead of the lighting being biased at the table scene, it is equally distributed in this shot allowing the shades of their outfits to complement one another.
The color blue was used a lot for the character Barry Egan. It was the color of his suit, in his office, and his home. Barry is a very depressed and awkward character. He is sad or blue throughtout most of the movie. The color blue surrounding his life adds to his constantly depressed state of mind. When Lena enters the scene she is usually wearing brighter colors. It clashes with Barry's blue. The only time that Barry is truly happy is when Lena is around, and the bright colors (pink in the picture) show when Barry goes from being sad all the time to being around something that makes him happy.
Paul Thomas Anderson's choice of wardrobe for Barry Egan seems as if he is trying to present the character in a very unassuming, underwhelming way. The dark blue suit is something of a classic and isn't attention grabbing at the least, much like Egan's character. The choice of color for Lena Leonard's wardrobe, in this case a brightly colored dress is meant to represent the vitality of how she lives her life and the light and color that she brings into Egan's otherwise monotone world.
From the opening picture I felt that Barry didn't really belong because the colors of everything from his workplace to his home seemed pretty bland and dull, while he always wore the blue suit that made him stand out to his sisters and made them worry about him. Also, in the last two pictures it seems as though both characters are wearing very outspoken colors, in a world of dullness, which gives more meaning as to why they were compatible and fell in love, and definitely to their character, such as Barry being the most outspoken out of everyone in the movie, and his girlfriend having a more interesting life and job than the rest of the characters.
In the first picture the blue suit Barry Egan is wearing screams out the character traits melancholy, sad, and honesty. He is an honest person as we saw through most of the movie, and he was full of bitterness and sadness until Lena Leonard’s character was introduced. In the second picture Lena is wearing red which portrays a flirtatious and free spirited character. The characters are wearing the colors I stated above which to me tie into their bizarre chemistry. Barry is a weird character hoping to fall in love (but trying really hard not to search for it), and Lena is a character wanting love and knowing who she wants it from. The second picture shows these two complete opposite characters connecting.
In the first picture, the scene is very plain and simple. His outfit is equally simple and he matches the walls. He sort of blends in with his surrondings, making it feel like he is shy, timid, quiet, and maybe even overlooked as a human being. This is enforced by the way everyone treats him, especially his sisters. They act as if he is nothing and he hardly exists.
In the picture with the two of them, they sort of compliment each other. The blue and the red being primary colors. When I see the picture, it makes me think about the gender...blue being a boy color, red being a girl color. Also, I feel that it shows even though he is dull and simple, she has a sense of lust and passion towards him. The red enforces that chemistry. I also believe that it makes her seem a lot more outgoing and friendly...she seems more confident to his shy blue.
This was an excellent use of color in the sense that it really helps you understand the characters more. The color reveals a lot about their personalities.
In the first picture Barry blends into his drab surroundings of blue and gray. The fact that he fits so well into the space shows his loneliness and isolation, which is evident until he finally gets together with Lena. Blue also depicts coldness or depression, also fitting for Barry.
The second pic with Lena in red/pink shows that she is there to balance out Barry's blue. She warms his soul and brings him out into the world to try and experience life. They are opposites that are absolutely perfect for each other.
It is true that there is a well developed plan for the use of colors in any form of art. The important factor in this film is that the colors are used to "indicate Barry's psychological battle". The author cleverily places the colors red white and blue throughout the film and it is up to the audience to figure out what those colors mean.
The color Blue is used by the author to show the audience how the main characer is feeling. Barry's home and work have a tenacious amount of blue as well as his suit. This could lead to the fact that Barry is unhappy with his life and he actually feels "blue".
Red on the other hand is what makes Barry happy.
There are many red objects that are used precisely throughout the movie which allows Barry to escape reality.Barry follows everything that is the color red, the dress, the truck, the arrows.
White on the other hand plays as Barry's oppressor and thwarts him in pursuing those things in red, or that make him happy.
The opening shot is a wonderful way of introducing the character of Barry Egan. The room looks overly large with just one desk and Barry sitting alone in this asymmetrical setting. The off-centering of the desk gives me the feeling that something about Barry’s life is not balance. The desk of his undecorated “office” is the only object in the room and this shows his loneliness. He is alone and no one else enters the scene as he speaks on the telephone. He is so lonely and isolated from everyone else even with a family of 7 sisters. Also it is evident that the walls of the opening shot are blue as well as the suit Barry wears throughout the film, this shows his feelings a mood of being alone and then that leads to the couple scene when Lena appears in the film with a vibrant red outfit. This color shows not only the love and attraction but also that there is something finally in Barry’s life with meaning and emotions. It is everything red in the film that brings Barry out of his loneliness and isolation and further takes him to happiness. There are a few other red objects such as the arrows pointing at both the direction of pudding and the way to run away from the “blond brothers.” And lastly there were red outfits on the airport associates that showed his happiness of running off toward Lena.
It shows that Barry, is trying to be professional, and trying to run his business, but really has no idea how. It shows that he really has no idea what he is doing, but making a attempt to being fruitful, or fruitless is up to the view. When it shows him going out on his date he is still wear that ugly blue suit so that also tells the person who is watching the film that Barry really is a player in the relationship catagory. It shows that he shows up to his date in his work close without changing, and getting ready for the date. Lena shows up in the bright pink ensemble that just shouts 'Here i am, Love me!' It is bright cheerful, colorful, and feminate like lena hersef.
The bold sold colors, I believe, help show how static and plain their (the characters) lives are. Throughout the whole movie the caracters and their traits remain veritably the same even though you see the characters go through different trials and tribulations to help them grow and self-develop. In the first scene we see Barry in his office/warehouse against a blue and white background. Essentially, his life has become his work with a very blase' background, no zest or excitment. Whereas once he meets Llana, he no longer his forced against a background with no life but has another bold, yet solid, color to explore.
I believe that color played a large role in the way that this movie was shot. They incorporated a lot of scenes where the colors blend, and then scences where they contrast eachother. I also liked the few scences where they decided to shoot with only background color and leave the actors in the shade, making the actors shadows in front of the backdrop. In the opening scence Barry's suit matches the wall behind him almost perfectly, suggesting he feels comfortable in this environment and belongs there. In the pictures of "the couple" their clothes are opposite colors, but maybe that is a good thing- since opposites attract, don't they?
The main colors in the first picture are blue and gray. The color gray is very dull and the color blue is often associated with sadness. In the scene, the audience becomes aware that Barry leads a somewhat dull, lonely life. He is somewhat depressed and there is no vibrancy in his life. The second picture shows both Barry and Lena. Barry is still wearing blue and Lena is wearing a pinkish, red outfit. Lena's wardrobe is bright. Barry did not have any passion in his life before he met Lena. Lena is a source of vibrancy and life for Barry. The color of Lena's clothes show the audience that she provides passion, vibrancy, and love to Barry's life.
In the first picture the colors are telling a lot about Barry. The whole picture tells us that he's lonely, boring, and no interesting. It's all blue which is saying he's boring and very dull and the vast space says he's lonely. The pictures of the two together also say a lot with their wardrobe. He's still wearing his blue suite but she has a pink shirt on which compliment each other. The pink says that she's more outgoing and not dull and boring like Barry.
In the opening shot, Barry, is wearing a blue suit that blends into the background. This would suggest that he is a character who usually goes with the flow and doesn't stand out. In the next two photos he is wearing the same blue suit but he is with the woman who is wearing red, another primary color, suggesting that they belong together. In the two photos the background is white, vs. the blue in the first shot, saying that the two of them are rebeling and standing out more, since the two of them going out was behind Barry's sister's back anyways.
I was a little confused that the girl was wearing nothing but red, until I remembered that red can stand for love as well. She is able to forgive Barry throughout the movie and never seems to get angry with him for any reason. That's because she has nothing but love for him (symbolized by having nothing but red on), and she trusts him completely.
Barry wears blue, a color that tends to symbolize calmness. When we are introduced to him he seems calm to the point of mousiness. but the fact that his large blue jacket covers his white shirt indicates that he is an innocent character, suseptable to being hurt, and trying to hide it. Barry also has a red tie, which to me symbolizes his slightly consealed love for the girl, as well as his random outbursts of rage and his rampages thoughout the film. Just as his clothes infer, he tries very hard to hide his feelings and potential weaknesses behind a calm mousey exterior, but he occasionally slips up.
I think that the coloration in the first shot shows us that Adam Sandlers charachter i kind of pathetic. He is shown as small, and his blue suit makes him completely blend in wih his background.
The second two slides show that the two charachters are very different, but that they work well together. She is wearing pink, which is the exact opposite of his dark blue. But, they are both strong solid colors, and look good next to each other.
The colors of their wardrobe say a lot about the characters. By wearing bright and bold colors, it shows that they have a strong uniqueness about them. Also, in the pictures they are wearing primary colors, showing that they are not like anyone else. According to the color wheel red, yellow, and blue are primary colors, they cannot be made by mixing other colors. Therefore, they are their own person. They are complete opposite colors and well... most people say opposites attract.
Color has its ways of talking about characters. In the first picture, the color of Barry’s wardrobe says that he is a person that just blends in, goes along with the flow, is barely noticed, and isn’t upset or disturbed by that fact. His suit is a dark blue, just like the stripe along the wall, causing him to almost blend in (as mentioned previously). His character is almost always this way, day in and day out, hardly ever changing from the norm.
In the last two pictures, the colors of their wardrobe cause them to “stand out” from the background, hinting that they are now not simply blending in, but stepping out from the shadows to take on more dynamic personalities as themselves.
Also, in the last two pictures, their wardrobe colors (dark blue and pink) are such stark contrasts that it is similar to the actuality that their personalities are total opposites. It almost hints to the concept that they are a perfect match or fit for each other, almost like the Yin and Yang, if you will.
In the opening scene, Barry is shown alone and he blends in with his blue background. However, in the scenes with both Lena and Barry, she is red and he is blue, which are both primary colors that work well with each other. The colors are visually appealing together to the eye and they also are symbolic of the cliche opposites attract. In the all blue opening scene, Barry blends in with his background and although it looks to be a lonely place, it also looks like his comofortable place. When he is with Lena, their colors stand out and complement each other.
I think that in the first picture was very plane. The background was very dull and so was the outfit he had on. This picture shows that he is a dull character and doesnt have much going on. In the second picture it was very colorful and had a lot more going on in the outfits the characters had on and in the background. This color makes the characters look very lively and like they are having lots of fun and makes it more interesting to watch.
The first picture draws attention to the color blue almost instantaneously. The simplicity of the room, furnished with only a desk, allows one to understand the simplicity that Barry operates both his business and his train of thought. The only colors present in this picture are blue, gray and a little brown from the desk. His oddly colored royal blue suit blends in with the bold color of blue on the walls, perhaps to symbolize the cold depressing routine that he has found himself a part of. It is strange that in such a bleak setting the bright color of royal blue is the primary color of the scene, yet in doing so, the producer allows viewers to understand that while Barry may be a bit off the wall, he sees the events and people in his life to be as ordinary as anyone else's.
The next few photos show Barry with Lena. His blue suit is striking in contrast with her pinkish red outfit. The two colors of their outfits are clear indicators of the personalities of each character. While the blue of Barry's suit accurately represents his loyalty to Lena, the fiery color she is wearing illustrates her emotion. Obviously a color of passion and love, her outfit describes her attraction to Barry. Together, the colors red and blue could be said to neutralize each other, just as fire and water can be used to tame the other.
The first picture with Gary sitting at his desk shows just how bland he is with only three colors and only two distinct ones. Later on in the movie in the scene showing the relationship with Gary and Lena a multitude of colors are being shown describing how Gary is becoming a more unique individual and how Lena is bright and bringing more out of him with more personality traits than just two.
Barry's wardrobe is his blue suit which blends intothe wall in the background which tells me he is a guy that has just been in the background all his life. He is quiet and just blends in with what appears to be a small room behind him. As we go through the movie he continues to wear the same blue suit but because his surroundings change he begins to stand out. By the end of the movie he is pictured against a white backdrop and stands out as a character. Also the final two pictures show the couple embracing and caring for one another they each seem to mesh with the other but also their wardrobes blend and help to become one through lighting, wardobe and all aspects of production design.
In the three shots, color definitely plays a huge role in determining character traits. In the opening shot we can determine that the character, (and subsequently his life) are very plain and boring. We can do this in several ways. The most obvious is the fact that the color of his suite matches the color of the walls in his office. This, coupled with the fact that other than a desk his office is completely bare, give the sense that there is very little to the character and his life. In the second and third pictures in the discussion topic we can plainly see that the two characters shown are very different, more specifically, the exact opposite of each other in multiple ways. We call tell this because the two colors worn by the people (res and blue) are juxtaposed to one another. They contrast greatly as primary colors on the color wheel.
In the picture where we first meet Barry had a bold solid color blue suit on which means to me that Barry was conservitive, loner, not a person who did a lot of exciting things in his life unlike the second picture where the suit is brighter and it seem like it was glowing as if he was happier, more life to him like the girl.
When we are first introduced to Barry the background and lighting are very dark. The colors seem as though everything is blue. This atmosphere gave off a very cold a depressing feeling. In the second picture you see bright colors and tons of lighting. This shows another side or character traits of Barry. This is a happy side. This color change shows that in the start of the film Barry was depressed, cold, and lonely. As the film continues it shows him in the brighter lights. He is now filled with joy.
the color of adam sandler's wardrobe and his surroundings show his dull life and personality. though in the second two pictures the wardrobe is a contrast of the two characters personalities. adam sandler's dull, uneventful character and her bright personality. when her character appears he finally seems happy and able to enjoy life.
Throughout this movie, colors within the wardrobe play very important roles although the average viewer does not pick up the purpose. In the opening scene with Barry sitting at his desk at work, he is wearing a blue suit, a white shirt, and a red tie. Each article of clothing is a specific color to play a significant role in the film. For example, Barry wore a blue suit primarily at home and at work and this is when the character is in a very blue mood. The red tie and white shirt play an important role as being in disagreement with each other because later in the movie, we find that red is directing Barry to happiness, and white is not.
In the second scene, Barry is wearing his red, white, and blue outfit and Lena is wearing an all-red dress. Lena’s red dress plays a very vital role in the film in that Barry is led to red colors all throughout the entire movie. Everything red in the movie is what leads Barry to his happiness that he has been looking for. When Lena wears the red dress at the restaurant, it signifies that she is Barry’s happiness. In the scene of them kissing, one can see a man in a blue suit who had previously been miserable all of the sudden become overjoyed by coming in contact with the woman in the red dress.
The colors and lighting in the first picture definitely reflect the personality traits of Barry. Throughout most of the beginning of the film he is very depressed and even cries a lot. The blue and gray colors, along with the dim lighting are a good representation of how "down" he is. The second picture, however, marks a turning point in his life, where begins to become happy because he meets Lena. This turning point is represented with a scene that has more colors and brighter lighting. Even Lena is wearing a brightly colored outfit.
The opening shot shows Barry working at his desk, isolated, and talking on the phone doing business. Barry is always surrounded by the color blue throughout the movie. The color of blue is shown in his home and his work place which give him a sense of comfort. The second picture of the couple shows that they interested in what each have to say. When Barry is around Lena, wearing the red dress, Barry is content. The red Lena is wearing symbolizes love and happiness.
The begining of the movie starts out with dark colors like blue and grey. These colors represent the dark, negative attitude that Barry portrays. It shows how he is lonely and has no one in his life. The colors get brighter and more cheerful later in the movie because he finally meets Lena. Lena brightens up the mood of the movie so the colors become brighter.
I think by showing Barry in the blue suit it shows that he is very set in his ways. He knows how he wants to live and he doesn't want to change anything, not even his suit. But then he meets a girl. Who's red wardrobe competely off sets his blue. This shows that Barry's life is going to be getting chatoic. And since this girl is seen in a lot of red, then maybe she is a perfect match for him.
In the opening shot we see barry in an empty room and the only colors are grey, white and blue. It is very simple which can imply chaios will occur. There will be some factor to turn his world into disorder. Later we see his his interaction with leah and the colors of their outfits play off eachother. She is wearing bright pink and he is wearing the same blue. The way the colors interact show connection between the characters.
The opening shot picture shows the scene and character to be a very lonley person. Someone who is very trapped and in there own world. It also leads the views to believe that the character is very troubled. But after seeing the second pictures, the characters are wearing very bright colors making them seem like they are happy people. Also it makes the scene seem like good things are going to happen.
I quickly researched what meanings different colors have (for example, in marketing). I found that red indicates hot, passionate, and active; blue indicates cold, serene, loyal, and excellence. We consistently see Barry wearing blue and Lena wearing red. This is consistent with their character traits and relation to each other: Lena is anxious and going after Barry, while Barry tends to keep to himself and was never intentionally looking for a relationship with Lena. (He does, of course, eventually fall for her.)
The opening scene introduces us to Barry sitting in a small room at a desk. The room as well as Barry's suit appear in different shades of blue creating a very dull setting. The suit adds to Barry's not so exciting first impression as he seems to himself and is nervous around other people.
When Barry begins seeing his new girfriend who is dressed in bright pink, we begin witnessing a change in Barry. She is very easy-going and says what she is thinking. Barry adopts some of these traits and reacts differently than we are used to. For example, after the car accident he walks over to the truck and smashes each guy with the club. I beleive she is the cause for the changes in Barry away from his blue image.
The Opening shot tells us a lot about Barry, the neat pressed suit shows us that he is a responsible person who does what he is told and needed to do. Showing him working in the corner of an empty room can show us that he is a lonely person who is very much an outsider.
Barry having 7 sisters has a very tight schedule all the time. The picture of him sittign in a room that has blue walls, and he is wearing a suit of the same blue color. This shows his very plain, dull lifestyle. Once he meets the mysterious woman, Lena, his personatlity changes. He gets a spark in his life and reason to exist. In the first picture you see that Barry looks very plain and unexcited, but when he is with Lena he is smiling and has a "glow" around him.
the bright colors of their outfits tell the audience that they aren't at all conservative and a possibly eccentric which we later find out. the couple's contrasting colors tell us that they are very different from each other, but the colors kind of go together so it also says that they may be different but they are meant for each other.
In the opening scene picture he is wearing blue, also the wall is painted the same color blue. This probably shows that he is a simple plan man, he probably depressed and doesnt care too much about anything. He is sitting all alone in the room, this also shows that he is depressed because no one is around him. He doesnt even look happy. Hes sitting all along looking down at his desk doing work.
The second picture the man looks happier because he has found a woman to love. However the same blue suit still protrays him as a simple man because he wears it through the entire movie. The woman looks much brighter. She is wearing pink, more of a lively and loveing color. She is more passionate and has more excitment in her life. She is not depressed and she is not a loner.
The colors in this movie protray they character traits very well.
We discussed how colors and costumes play a big role in the traits and descriptions of the characters of a movie. I think in the movie Punch Drunk Love this is displayed well especailly in the three shots shown. Starting with the cover, the couple is there kissing with a flow of two colors, red and blue. Following the cover are three screen-shots in which Barry is always in his blue suit and Leena in red. I think the color contrast is showing their contrast in character yet compatibility as couple.
From Barry's wardrobe in the opening shot I thought of him as a well organized and clean cut guy. But the blue color of the suit he was wearing could have been a sywmbol for his melancholy and his constant felling down about himself. In the first shot he is also surrounded by the same colors that he is wearing and he is in a rather empty, plain, neat, and boring room which also said something about Barry. Also like in edward scissorhands we saw lots of organization in the beginning tat foreshadowed a coming period of chaos or conflict, the same happened to Barry in this film. the colors that Emily wore signified to me that she was certaintly a happy person who did alot of exciting things (she traveled a lot for her job). she was kind of the exact opposite of Barry. also this may seem like a rather obvious observation but they were each wearing colors typical for there gender i.e. painting a boys room blue and a girls room pink.
As we have discussed in class the colors in wardrobe and in the background can affect the mood and atmosphere in the movie. In the first scene, the color is very drap, everything kind of runs together; there is no difference in color. From this the viewer gets the idea that the man in the room is very average and is not very happy. Then from the next pictures, the same man is very interested in the women, Lena, that is with him. The same drab suit that he was wearing in introductory scene, is lit up with different lighting and the beautiful women with him in the red dress. This sets the mood for a more romantic and cheery setting. All together, the view of Barry changes, from some somber man to a happier fellow.
When we are first introduced to Barry in the opening scene and he is wearing the bright blue suit one can assume that Barry is a business man. The shade of the color does not necessarily say that Barry is extremely serious, you need to be a bold person to wear that shade of blue, but that fact that he is wearing a suit shows he wants to dress to impress. Also, the bright blue suit represents a sense of power because again, anyone who wears that tone of blue has to have a strong character and personality to wear that. Barry's image from the color of his suit does somewhat match up with his actual personality. He does try to outsmart the travel company by buying all of the healthy choice meals to gain miles. This alone shows that he has the power to outwit the company. The boldness from the color in his suit comes out in his personality when he goes the mattress store to confront the owner as well as when he travels to Hawaii to meet Lena without warning.
The colors of the wardrobes of the couple seem to represent masculinity versus femininity. Blue typically represents men and shades of red (pink, etc.) typically represent women. Both characters are wearing bright shades of each of their colors. Even though these colors typically represent opposite things, they go very well together, possibly meaning that Barry and Lena are a perfect match, which in the end of the film they do end up together. In the first picture shown of the couple at dinner, Lena’s wardrobe looks very delicate and extremely feminine compared to Barry’s bold yet masculine suit. Again, the two go together very well, although at first one may think that they seem to be complete opposites, the boldness of Barry and the more delicate features of Lena balance each other out. Even throughout the film, when Barry tears things apart Lena is what calms him down, they mesh well together.
The opening scene where we meet Barry Egan it is obvious of the impression that the director is trying to give, and he does that with the colors blue and gray. This relates to Egan because his personality type if reflected onto a painting would look like the opening scene. His he tries to remain calm and screne, the color blue, on the outside but inside in this little spot in the corner of this emptiness is chaos ready to explode of the desk, hence all of the papers on the desk. In the second two pictures The colors of mellow beige that overwhelm the frame show the serenity that Egan feels when hes with her, but her blazing shirt shows the anxity that she gives him by being so exciting herself. The second shot is when his calm side is taking over himself and her, as they exit the resturant as if nothing happend when Egan destroyed the restroom. The second scene of the characters together almost depicts that Egan's insanity is almost consuming Lena as well.
Adam Sandler's character is someone that tries to fit in with his surroundings. You can see this by him being dressed in blue when that is also the color of his office. This also shows that he will be thrown out of his surroundings at some point in the movie. The girl looks totally opposite from him which shows that she loves to try new things and even though they are such opposites, they fall in love with one another.
From the first picture, I thought that from the costume and seting that Sandler's character's life is very mundane and dull. It looks like a big prison that he wants to get out of. The second picture looks like its a first date. Even though Sandler's costume hasn't changed, he looks a lot happier then he did in the opening shot. The lighting is also warmer and more suthing.

I believe that a lot can be said by what a chracter is wearng. the audience can identify with their certain style or the way their clothes make them appear. in the opening scene Barry is pictured in blue suit. This to me symbolizes that he is a working man with a good profession and that he may be somehwta serious. the second picture where barry is still pictured in a suit but she is pictured in a red dress to me symbolizes the fact that she is either seductive or out for something.. Red is a very powerful color that can be linked wiht a lot of different emotions
In the first picture, everything is in a shade of blue including his wardrobe and the background setting. Blue is usually known as a "cool" color and accompanies a feeling of loneliness or sadness. This mood reflects his character traits in the opening of the movie. In the second pictures, the director starts by using the warmth of a yellow tone of light relfecting off the top of their faces which, unlike in the first photo, displays a sense of love and comfort between the two characters. Also, the pink color of her clothing brings a more feminine and happy feel to the picture. With the combination of the lighting and and the addition of the "happier" clothing, the same blue suit from the first picture on adam sandler changes him to also have a happy and loving feeling.
So the cover shows how they intertwine but the opening seen lets us know how the director really wanted his personality to be represented. He being represented by the color blue and hers by the color red. This also represents their personalities and how they come together.
In the first picture you see the opposition of Barry and Lena, while in the second picture the contrasting colors bring them together like the over used phrase of opposites attract. Barry in the dark colors because he is an angry person in the film, while Lena in her reddish pink shirt to show that she is a softer character, and less dark; innocent.
The bland colors of the first picture with Adam Sandler shows the viewer that he is a pretty bland and eccentric character in the movie. Exactly the opposite is Emily Watson in her bright colors and outgoing personality.
I think the basic blue and pink colors reflect a very basic relationship. Those colors are almost always identified with masculine and feminine things. Also the fact that the colors are solid and simple show they are not meant to ditract from the film or say anything peculiar about either of the characters.
In the opening shot, there are a lot of blues, grays, and dirty whites in Bary's outfit. These happen to be colors that make the audience feel very gloomy. He's wearing a suit, which might say that he is in a high position or has aspirations to be a better person. Also, a lot of that gray is empty space, which also tells you that he is very much a loner.
In the second shot, Lena's bright pink shirt and blonde hair are an indicator of her sense of adventure and the fact that she likes to go out and do things with her life. Sitting next to Bary, she almost lights his suit, making him look more personable. Also, they are sitting in very close proximity which gives the audience the feeling of intimacy that they both probably crave.
Even from the very initial shot of the film, the audience should be able to discern that director Paul Thomas Anderson is making definitive visual statements through the main characters' wardrobe selections. As the film commences, we are introduced to Barry, who seemingly just blends into the background of his desolate office/warehouse. It is not until Barry first meets Lena that P.T. Anderson shows us a brilliant juxtaposition of colors, symbollizing the harmonious union of the two lovers as counterparts to one another (Barry and Lena balance each other out, a Yin to the other's Yang). I personally feel that Barry's color selection is somewhat contradictory to his nature however, considering that he is significantly more fiery and hot-headed, yet it is Lena who is the character dressed prevalently in red.
In the opening scene of the movie, the colors are used to portray the life of Barry. Most of the shot in the scene is full of one color (blue). In contrast to Barry's life, this can relate to how his life is "in balance" and everything about it is pretty much constant. However, this sense of consistency seems unsecure, as if its a fragile ora that can be interrupted by outside forces. In my opinion, Barry continued to wear the same blue suit throghout the movie to show his need to this sense of consistency. Now, once Barry meets Lena, this sense of consitency begins to fade away but a sense of security for Barry develops. Most scenes in which both actors played a part in displayed a wide variety of color that complimented each other, as sort of an indication that they complimented each other. Before the audience got a chance to see how the scene would play out, the color used in the scene created an idea for the audience as to what was to come. In films like "Punch Drunk Love", color plays a vital role in how the film plays out.
The colors in this film have a dramatic effect on how the characters develop. Throughout the entire movie Barry is wearing a blue suit. In the picture, it shows him wearing that suit while sitting in a room with a blue wall. This represents how his live has become bland and he blends in with his surroundings.
The second two pictures with the couple have the two wearing clothing that compliments each other on the color wheel. Just by the clothing being worn, it makes it seem the two people should be together.
I guess the wardrobe colors in the first picture indicates that the character is not normal. He is wearing a intense blue suit, which is not the conventional color of a business suit, but it shows that he is trying to be professional. It relation to te girl's clothes, I think she is wearing a solid vibrant red in order to play off of Sandler's blue suit while complementing it.
Well, in the opening scene the character matching in with the blue walls makes him seem like a person that knows whats going on. He seems like he can take whatever is coming and can roll with it. At scene 2 the bright red and blue colors that the couple wears makes them seem like they are the perfect couple... almost as if everything is so graceful and bright. It definitely puts them in the front of the picture. The third picture of the couple kissing gives you the feeling that they will last forever. The bright colors give you the feeling that this will be the kiss of a lifetime.
I believe that the suit shows that adam sandlers character is very routine and anal....in the begininning shot it is also dark and gloomy which is kind of portraying sadness and in the couple picture it is bright and colorful portraying hapiness
the opening scene illustrates a reclusive man, shying away from society, and as an aid to his introverted nature, persistantly wearing the same blue suit further indicates how he lives away from everyone else. His girlfriend, however, in the other image in wearing a bright, vibrant outfit, which counteracts with egan's. The scene of the kissing is bright and romantic, which indicates the breaking away of lonliness from egan, through lena's more extroverted personality. The colors of their clothes represent each character because the shyer man wear blue, a boring color, and the more extroverted woman is wearing red.
The colors the characters wear in the movie portray the charaters well. The fact that Barry wears a dark suit throughout the movie shows hes more reserved and quite, usually dark colors are uninviting. The red dress on Lena is filling with life, love, and warmth. In some scences the blue will stand out, or blend in. As other colors enter Barry's world, they represent happiness because they are bright and cheery. The fact that bold solid eccentric colors are used makes them stand out even more. Also, some of the colors are opposite but also complement eachother in a fitting way.
It is obvious that red and blue were purposely used throughout the movie as a reflection of Barry Egan's (Adam Sandler) and Lena Leonard's (Emily watson )personalities.
The color blue reflect some of Barry Egan characters, shy afraid to venture into relationship. Lena's red dress, on the other hand, describes her character as, warm and loving.
I would like to first say that punch drunk love is the weirdest movie I've ever seen. It is full of symbolism and metaphors. But anyways, the first shot of the movie cues the audience into the bizarre personality of Barry Egan, played by Adam Sandler. The first shot shows Barry alone at his desk wearing a blue suit which he wears throughout the entire movie. The first shot shows that Egan is a loner and is very much affected by change and doesn't like it very much. he's stuck in his own world, until he meets Lena, who forces him out of his shell. in the second and third pictures you see barry progress into a normal human being and become more integrated into society. the shots also become more colorful and fun and the movie gets a little more interesting. Lena is the one who gets Barry to be more normal.
In the first shot you see Barry in the same blue suit you see him in through out the enitre film showing that he is some one cold, introverted, and very consious out his routine.
In the second two pictures you see Barry light up to Lena who is wearing bright red. The blue oposite the red shows the contrasting personalities between the two. And also shows that when put together can balance eachother out and become one... ie purple.
Barry Egan, throughout the entirety of the film Punch Drunk Love, is clad in a drab, dark blue suit. Lena Leonard, on a completely different note, is portrayed as a lighter character, wearing pink clothes and brighter colors throughout the film. It is understood from square one, due to the blatant differences between the two, that opposites will attract undoubtedly. It happens that Lena's more outgoing personality and Barry's introverted personality combine to create a wonderful kind of attraction, one complementing the other very well.
Punch Drunk Love
Colors help with telling the story about two people in this movie. In the first scene is shows Barry sitting in the corner of a dark room with the light shining on him in a bright blue suit, this helps show how Barry is in a way very secretive from world and at the same time his secrets make him stand out from everyone around him. During the entire film Barry is found wearing this blue suit, while Barry is shown wearing this suit in other scenes he sticks out like a soar thumb compared to everything else that is involved in the shot he is in. This helps focus more on what Barry is doing and also shows how different he is from his surroundings. But when he encounters Lena she is wearing bright colors as shown in the second picture. In this scene everything around them is dull while the colors that they are wearing are bright, this shows how happy the two are around each other and how compatible they are compared to the rest of the environment. This comes to be true when at the end of the movie Barry and Lena end up staying as a couple together.
The colors in the film are an intricate part. The dark colors that is worn and seen around Barry show that he is a man that is depressed and the fact that he wears it consistently throughout the film shows that he likes to keep things in a certain way. When Lena enters into his life the scenes always have a lot of color and the demeanor of both characters change into one that is more lively.
Barry's clothing is one of the easiest subtle clues to pick out in the movie. He wears the hue of colors throughout the movie portraying his very introverted personality. the dark colors helps pull in exactly how he feels to the outside world. His personality turns around when he meets Lena, his new girlfriend. She unlike Barry is very open and energetic. This again is portrayed through her wardrobe options. It adds to the feeling that we get when ever we see her.
